The Sound of Data

What does data sound like? Can the sound of data help to analyse and explore a dataset?

In this little experiment I generate a simple sine wave based sound from the on screen forms being made. The mouse Y position (representing a data value) changes the form of the object and in so doing changes the sound created.

The form itself is a geometric shape based on the work of computer graphics pioneer John Whitney. Could our datasets and the data contained within create these forms? Could data be summarised by the use of these forms, tempting you into to explore further?

The addition of sound really adds another dimension to the exploration of the data. It could be that a soundscape is composed that the user could begin to understand represents certain things/ Deep notes mean this, detuned notes mean another thing. Harmonies and chards mean there’s interesting stuff contained within.
